Physico-Mechanical and Morphological Study of Starch/Polyvinylalcohol Based Biocomposite Films Reinforced with Microcrystalline Cellulose
Micro crystalline (MC) cellulose particles were prepared from cotton slivers by acid hydrolysis. Starch/Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) based biocomposite films reinforced with microcrystalline cellulose were prepared by solution casting method, incorporating glycerol as a plasticizer. Reinforcements were done by using cellulose microcrystals with different weight percent for example 2, 5, 10 and 15. These biocomposite films were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), mechanical characterization, permeability test, water uptake behavior, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Mechanical properties, moisture uptake and water vapor transmission rate of the biocomposite films were found to be significantly dependent on the MC cellulose content of the films. SEM investigation was undertaken to determine the size of the MC cellulose particles formed and also to investigate the dispersion of MC cellulose particles in the starch/PVA blend matrix.

The Journal of Biobased Materials and Bioenergy (JBMB) has been created as an international peer-reviewed periodical to fulfill the need for communication in these research areas. This journal will encompass related research activities in all fields of science, engineering and the life sciences.
