Compact Multislot Planar Monopole Antenna for Microwave Imaging

A novel compact planar monopole antenna fed with a microstrip-line is presented. The proposed planar monopole antenna featuring a compact size of 16 mm×16 mm, multislot, and a simple tuning stub design. It is intended for use in the early stage breast cancer detection that covers the ultra-wideband (UWB) frequency band. A wide impedance bandwidth of around 65% (4.9–9.6 GHz) is achieved. The parametric studies indicated that the proposed antenna has salient characteristics, low profile and compactness compared to existing UWB antennas. The antenna demonstrated an omnidirectional radiation pattern at low frequencies.
