In a challenging business environment within a competitive local market, it is fundamental to understand the resilient traits of small-scale Malaysian entrepreneurs which may then lead to future entrepreneurial success. The focus of this paper is to examine the ability of rural-based small-scale business entrepreneurs, who were initially stricken by poverty, to engage in entrepreneurial activities. The first objective is to identify resilience factors that have significant impact on entrepreneurial success and the second objective is to examine the relationship between resilience levels and future entrepreneurial success. By using the five Likert scale CD-RISC inventory to measure their resilience and successfulness, questionnaires were distributed to 168 entrepreneurs from a mix of small-scale businesses located in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia and nearby localities. Regression analysis showed that hardiness and resourcefulness are two factors that have significant impact on entrepreneurial success. The outcome of this study will help to serve a significant role in providing insights to entrepreneurs in order to overcome hardships and adversities in business through an increase in their entrepreneurial resilience and thus, will help them to prepare themselves with knowledge and training to increase and sustain their inner resilience.
