Sustainability of the Batik Block Industry in Kelantan and Terengganu

Batik is from the Malay word ‘tik’ which means ‘to drip’ or ‘to drop’ which was well-known in the area of Kota Bharu and Kuala Terengganu, Malaysia. Meanwhile, batik cap is a technique of wax—resist coloring on a cloth made by pressing the fabric with a copper stamp that forms as block mold. Thus, this conceptual study attempted to discover the influence towards the acceptance and usage of local batik block product of the current society in Malaysia. Currently, Malaysian batik block received minimal acceptance from the current society from the buyer, due to the outdated design. One of the reasons, the batik block designs are outdated is, the batik makers do not adapt their design based on the latest trend. Besides, batik is used only as batik sarong as this is the only expectation of the buyers, batik block product needs to be introduced again with the up to date design using a suitable guideline. This is in line with the recommendations that highlighted, efforts that should be taken and urge the need for a specific new design for batik block. This new study has been getting great attention from the researchers in the past literature and this encouraged the present study for further investigation to address this gap. Thus, this study is critically analyzing the influence and acceptance factors with the aims to uplift the awareness toward heritage textile especially of block batik usage among the current society in Malaysia. The outcome from this study significantly will highlighted in how the tradition technique and design in batik blocks will sustain for the future creative industry in this country.
