A Design Technique for LLC Resonance-Type Converters Using a New Material (GaN HEMT) and SR

Suggested in the present article is a design technique which freely changes resonance frequencies by design using a new material (GaN HEMT) for LLC resonance-type converters, and improves efficiencies and temperature characteristics upon operation of the power supply device by adding the synchronous rectification method to the secondary side output unit. In the present article, a demonstration board is proposed to allow high efficiencies and miniaturization by using GaN HEMT, and several advantages have been clearly shown for the proposed converter by having all of PFC + LLC + SR operated at a high switching frequency of 200 kHz. The most highlighted content among these will be the temperature characteristics of GaN HEMT. According to the temperature measurement results at 250 W (12 V/20 A), temperatures lower than 55 °C have been observed without a heat sink. (See the text)
