Condensation of Silicic Acid in the Presence of Co(1-Vinylimidazole–Acrylic Acid)

Condensation of silicic acid had been studied in aqueous medium in the presence of polyampholyte copolymers of 1-vinylimidazole and acrylic acid which were used as an artificial model of the natural silicification agents. Inhibition action of organic polymers on the condensation was found for copolymers containing more than 44% of imidazole units. This effect is connected with deactivating of silanol groups of primary silica nanoparticles in complexing with copolymers. Condensation of silicic acid in the presence of copolymers results in formation of stable nanoparticles of 20–30 nm in radius which can serve as a synthetic model of silicon transport vesicles of diatom algae. On the other hand, these systems are a peculiar new precursor for silica and hybrid materials. The composite nanoparticles combines stability in water medium, low size and unimodal size distribution, environmental safety which are not easily accessible for classic precursors (inorganic silicates, organic ethers of silicic acid). Composite precipitates stabilized by hydrogen bonds with 1-vinylimidazole units were obtained. Study of the precipitates with scanning electron microscopy have showed that introduction of carboxylic groups into poly(1-vinylimidazole) chain promotes aggregation of submicron particles.
