Interaction in Aqueous Mixtures of Sodium N-(n-Alkanoyl)-L-Alaninate and n-Alkyltrimethylammonium Hydroxide Surfactants: Effects of Composition and Hydrocarbon Chain Length
Aqueous solutions of strongly interacting anionic/cationic surfactant mixture of sodium N-alkanoyl-L-alaninate, SAA and cetyltrimethylammonium hydroxide (CTAOH) and dodecyltrimethylammonium hydroxide (DTAOH) have been studied by means of surface tension measurements. In this work we have studied and compared the physicochemical properties of the binary surfactant mixtures at different mixing ratios and role of alkyl chain length on surface activity and interaction have been investigated. The mixed critical micellar concentration (cmc) values determined from experimental data were used to calculate the interaction parameter (β) using regular solution theory (RST) of the mixed surfactant systems. It was found to be large negative and composition dependent. Binary surfactant mixtures at different compositions were found to be high surface active and high electrostatic interactions. However, the results demonstrate high surface activity as well as synergistic mixing behavior where the strength of interaction is dependent upon the alkyl chain length either one of the surfactants.
