Free Content The MR Imaging Identification of the Facial Muscles and the Subcutaneous Musculoaponeurotic System

Nonverbal communication of human emotions is accomplished via the facial or mimetic muscles. The SMAS magnifies the action of these muscles on the face. The precise MR imaging identification of the facial muscles and the SMAS has not been previously reported. We imaged a fresh cadaver, then dissected the facial muscles and labeled them, and then re-imaged the same cadaver. These labeled images were then compared with clinical MR images. The results of our efforts are presented in an atlas.

Keywords: ENT = ear, nose, and throat; SMAS = subcutaneous musculoaponeurotic system
