Development of an ECS Simulator for Warship Propulsion Systems

Recent developments in power conversion technology have enabled the implementation of an innovative design incorporating hybrid or all-electric drive systems. With increasing complexity of the equipment configuration, such propulsion systems require more advanced control systems.

The propulsion system of a warship, the engineering control system (ECS), is critical for warship operation and requires high reliability. Owing to issues with reliability, the Republic of Korea imports equipment for its navy from specialized companies overseas, such as L3 Technologies and SEASTEMA.

A real-time hardware-in-the-loop system (RT-HILS) simulator was developed to ensure ECS trustworthiness. The simulator controller was applied considering the warship propulsion system controller developed by Hanwha Systems.

The developed simulator consists of a basic model, a control model, and other characteristic models, and can perform ECS verification. The developed simulator defined the propulsion system of a virtual warship and enabled the analysis of the physical relationship between each propulsion device
