Implementing Career Academies in Florida: A Case Study Approach to Understanding Successes and Obstacles
Recent legislation in Florida mandated that all school districts open at least one career academy by the 2008-2009 school-year, impacting career academy implementation dramatically. As the number of career academies in Florida increases, ensuring success requires attention to the complexities
of implementation. Qualitative research conducted with a purposive sample of one school district was used to generate three case studies examined in this investigation. The Career Academy National Standards of Practice provide the basis for the study's conceptual framework. Student recruitment
and scheduling, elements of Standard 2, presented obstacles to implementation. Academies were encouraged by early success in relationship-building among faculty and students and the real-world application of course content, elements of Standard 2 and Standard 7, respectively.

- (CTER) publishes refereed articles that examine research and research-related topics in vocational/career and technical education, career development, human resource development, career issues in the schools (Grades K-12), postsecondary education, adult and lifelong learning, and workforce education. The CTER Editorial Board is committed to publishing scholarly work that represents a variety of conceptual and methodological bases. Submission of manuscripts representing one of the following styles is encouraged: (a) empirically-based manuscripts that report results of original research, either quantitative or qualitative, (b) reviews or synthesis of empirical or theoretical literature, (c) essays derived from original historical or philosophical research, (d) reviews of recently published books, and (e) rejoinders to articles recently published in CTER. CTER will consider for publication papers initially presented at conferences, including those disseminated through conference proceedings.
