Predicting Secondary Agriculture Teachers' Job Stress from Selected Personal, Family, and Work-Related Characteristics

The study sought to describe the characteristics and explain the current level of job stress among secondary agriculture teachers. The sample consisted of 370 secondary agriculture teachers. Data were collected using the Job Stress Survey (Spielberger & Vagg, 1999). From the findings it was concluded that the average secondary agriculture teacher was a male with nearly 12 years of experience. Almost half work in a single teacher department and over two-thirds reported working between 46-65 hours per week. The majority of teachers also reported that they received social support from friends and/or family, but not from professional associations or community organizations. The number of hours per week at work was the largest predictor on the index scale used to measure job stress. The second predictor was the number of years teaching with novice teachers showing higher stress levels than more experienced teachers in this study.
