When performing an American Land Title Association–American Congress on Surveying and Mapping (ALTA–ACSM) field survey, professional land surveyors must meet a precision criterion based on error ellipses from least squares adjustments. A simulation of a least squares adjustment was performed on four lots of varied size commonly found in practice. An analysis of the feasibility of meeting the precision criterion was conducted. Based on this simulation, recommendations are given as to the type of equipment and field procedures required to attain the ALTA–ACSM precision criterion for these surveys.
