Major Andrew Ellicott's Survey of the First Southern Boundary of the United States
In this article is presented, in a general context, Major Andrew Ellicott's historical survey of the first Southern Boundary of the United States. The basic chronological developments leading to the boundary determination is important to surveys over the years. Specifically, this paper presents Ellicott's qualifications as a surveyor; the land disputes between England, Spain, and the United States; the ensuing treaties and boundary survey that resolved those disputes; and the effects and aftermath of the resulting first southern boundary of the United States.
