Strengthening Family and Consumer Sciences Extension Professionals Through a Competency-Based Professional Development System
Responding to reduced funding and organizational restructuring, many state Extension programs have reorganized counties into regional-based entities and limited family and consumer sciences (FCS) to specialized programs in areas such as foods and nutrition (Braverman, Franz, & Rennekamp,
2012; Franz & Cox, 2012; White & Teuteberg, 2015). Contrary to these recent trends, the University of Tennessee (UT) Extension has continued a countybased model with FCS agents who teach a broad base of FCS programs. UT continues to recognize the importance of this holistic approach
by maintaining a strong Extension presence. This includes hiring new FCS agents with an FCS degree in all 95 counties across the state. Part of the commitment to this model has been the development of a competency-based professional development plan for new FCS agents. The purpose of this
article is to explore how FCS Extension professionals are positioned to help transform their communities through a strategic blend of education and training. Examples from the UT Extension FCS programs are used to examine how FCS professionals may be supported through this process.
