Dissolution of a solute in a solvents leads to breaking of bond between similar types of molecules and formation of bond between dissimilar molecules. Therefore, the nature of the solute in a solvent is greatly depends on the extent of interaction between them. Various techniques like density, viscosity, conductivity etc. are used to compare the above interaction. Ultrasonic velocity measurements and the derived acoustic parameters such as isothermal compressibility (β), acoustic impedance (Z), intermolecular free length (L f ), surface tension (σ) and solvation number (S n ) are important toll to predict the nature and extent of interaction between the solute and solvent. The main aim of this work is to study the ion-solvent interaction of Butylated Hydroxy Toluene (BHT) in ethanol because of its wide use as anti-oxidant, anti-viral and many other important applications. The ultrasonic velocities, density of the alcoholic solutions of BHT at different concentrations are measured and the derived parameters are computed from these data. The results are interpreted in terms of suitable mechanism to explain the solute—solvent interaction. The presence of hydrophilic and hydrophobic group in BHT shows an interesting pattern of solute solvent interactions.
