Pedagogical Imagery in Teacher Education
This comparative qualitative study proposes to analyse the social and individual constructions of images about schooling among pre-service teacher education students in Argentina and the United States. The analysis of the data, produced by 288 students who participated in this study,
indicates that almost all students view “caring” and “dedication” as key components of an “ideal or successful” teacher. However, Argentinean and American students’ conceptualisation of these elements are quite distinct. This article will discuss and
explain the way these differences in the understanding of caring are rooted in distinctive constructions around the models of masculinity-femininity, concepts of authority, and use of the body in teaching.
