Public rejection of biosolids use in agriculture is based on an emotional reaction (the yuk factor), which stems from the intuition that human wastes are bad and are not suitable for beneficial use, especially not for growing food. Emotional reactions tend to dissipate when facts are introduced, especially when the facts are backed by real-life testimonies. A lot of resources have been spent on the science and the risk of the land application process. Very little has been done in preparing the public to accept land application of biosolids as a good option. An uninformed or poorly informed public is a suspicious public. The information on biosolids and its land application must be simple and true. It must also acknowledge its problems. Only by doing this, the public will determine that in spite of these problems biosolids are safe to use.
