Wading Bird Colony Protection in the Indian River Lagoon
The Florida Game and Fresh Water Fish Commission's (Commission) Bureau of Nongame Wildlife developed a ranking system which indicated that fauna in Florida's coastal communities were priority candidates for conservation and management. Wading birds were identified as an important group
of the coastal community fauna and a plan was implemented to protect and manage important nesting colonies throughout the state. Out of 950 wading bird breeding localities, biologists targeted 100 sites for immediate attention. Commission staff gave each wading bird nesting site a priority
score, and created a list of the top ten nesting colonies which needed immediate management. Six of these “Top 10” sites are located in the Indian River Lagoon. Protection and monitoring efforts will focus on creating a network of local volunteers who can perform management tasks
as well as educate the general public on the importance of wading bird nesting sites located in the Indian River Lagoon.
