The Premetamorphic Developmental Rate of Phragmatopoma Lapidosa Kinberg, 1867, Compared With that in Temperate Sabellariids (Polychaeta: Sabellariidae)
The premetamorphic developmental rate of Phragmatopoma lapidosa was studied and compared with that found in temperate species (Wilson, 1929; 1968a). No gross morphological differences were found; however, P. lapidosa had a developmental rate which was found to be much
faster: 3 weeks as compared to 6-12 weeks. Identification of P. lapidosa larvae can be made on the basis of the morphology of the paleae. Before the appearance of the paleae, P. lapidosa larvae are indistinguishable from the larvae of Sabellaria alveolata and S. spinulosa.
