Protective Coloration and Habitat of the Shrimp Tozeuma Carolinensis Kingsley, (Caridea: Hippolytidae)

The caridean shrimp Tozeuma carolinensis Kingsley is reported as inhabiting colonies of alcyonarians of the genera Antillogorgia and Pterogorgia, clinging to the branches by means of the pereiopods and uropods. When on grassy bottom the animal is a light greenish color, but when inhabiting the alcyonarians the body and proximal parts of the appendages are dark bluish purple. A gravid female and a male are illustrated, the latter clinging to an alcyonarian. The use of the uropods for clinging is apparently unusual in the Caridea.
