Children's reflections on play

As children nowadays are seen as active participants in co-constructing their learning, and their ideas and thoughts should be heard by teachers, our study focuses on children's reflections on play. The main aim of the study was to analyse children's conceptions about play and play opportunities provided in childcare institutions. A total of 78 preschool children were interviewed, aged from four to seven. The results suggest that children find it difficult to give a definition of play. Play was strongly related to fun, a good mood and not being bored, and the children connected it with learning. They also pointed out that they needed more space for playing. Among the group differences was a preference for 6- to 7-year-old boys to play outdoors.
