Number of Branchlets on Red Pine in Young Plantations
Number of branchlets was investigated in relation to the more easilymeasured variables of height, stem diameter 1 foot above ground, and number of internodes on sample trees in 12 Pinus resinosa Ait. plantations 4 to 18 years old. Regressions describing six useful relationships between number of branchlets and these variables are presented. Height was the most versatile estimator because of predictive power and ease of obtaining past measurements. Yearly branchlet multiplication was studied in three representative situations where past branchlet numbers had been reconstructed. It is highest in early plantation life, probably seldom exceeding a value of 3.5, and declines steadily with plantation age. Number of branchlets added yearly per tree steadily increases, but is not likely to exceed 100 in the preclosure life of plantation trees spaced at 6x6 feet.
