Open Access Public Opinion and Passive Complicity during the Algerian War: Simone de Beauvoir and the Djamila Boupacha Affair

This article examines the manner in which Simone de Beauvoir sought to inform public opinion of the rape and torture of Algerian nationalist Djamila Boupacha at the hands of the French army. It analyses the rhetorical devices used in her attempts to combat indifference and passive complicity and investigates the multiple motivations for her commitment.
