Cet article interroge la posture d'auteur de Montherlant dans ses Essais . D'un côté, Montherlant souhaite pouvoir s'affranchir des thémes de l'actualité, de l'autre côté, cette attitude semble un moyen habile d' échapper á toute condamnation d'ordre idéologique. C'est, in fine, la relation complexe que Montherlant entretient avec l'opinion publique qui est la preuve que cet auteur est bien moins 'au-dessus de la mêlée' qu'il ne veut le faire croire.
