Open Access Simone de Beauvoir on Stendhal: in Good Faith or in Bad?

This article explores the apparent contradiction at the heart of Simone de Beauvoir's 'Stendhal ou le romanesque du vrai', a study that appears towards the end of the first volume of Le Deuxiéme Sexe. Although she presents Stendhal as an exception to the rule that sees male novelists represent women as passive Others, Beauvoir herself privileges Stendhal's resigned 'prisonniéres' over his self-determining heroines.
