Mise-en-scène in search of its contemporary identity
In his book Contemporary Mise en Scène: Staging Theatre Today, Pavis appears to be a subtle and extremely passionate observer of contemporary theatre. Due to the extended spectrum of heterogeneity and eclecticism, he recognises the need to expand the view of theatre (especially
perhaps the French view). In his desire to cover the multiple natures of contemporary stage practices, he adds performance to the mise-en-scène. If Pavis's theory seems to be slightly unclear at moments or maybe even contradicting at times - which might be due to the insufficient space
given to the theoretical explanation - he distinguishes himself with his clear historic frame and the broad spectrum of contemporary performance practices that he discusses with great enthusiasm and attention to mise-en-scène endeavours.
