The author proposes an alternative explanatory basis for understanding consciousness, one that circumnavigates the common assumptions which inevitably arise when we employ the concepts of 'matter' and 'spirit'. The author argues that despite their past and current utility in other areas of endeavour, our reliance on these two conceptual tools is the chief stumbling block to progress in consciousness studies, and prevents us engaging a more accurate and objective world-model.
