Some 19th Century Problems Of Evolution (1965)

The following is a previously unpublished article by Gregory Bateson, dated 1965. It brings to bear Gregory Bateson's idiosyncratic version of information theory and cybernetics, as he had developed it by that time, on larger questions of the theory of evolution. Looking back in some ways to 19th Century pioneering ideas in evolution, such as those of Darwin, Lamarck, Samuel Butler, and his own father William Bateson, this highly theoretical article anticipates subsequent developments not only in Gregory Bateson's own thought but also in biosemiotics, bioinformatics and Evo Devo.
