The Effects of Mechanical Coupling on the Beam Pattern of a Multi-element Array
The paper presents a new method of side lobes reduction in a multi-element linear array. What sets it apart from other methods e.g. weighting the aperture of the elements, weighting the amplitude and phase of the signal transmitted (received) by the elements , is that the distribution of vibrations on the array's aperture is the result of mechanical coupling between the elements. The article discusses the results of tests and simulations involving several models of arrays made up of five acoustically insulated elements, coupled with metal separators of varying thickness. The study confirmed that by choosing the right type of material and its thickness, we could reduce the side lobes of an array beam pattern to −20 dB in relation to the main lobe level.
