Comparison of Backscattered Sea Bottom Echo Modelling in the Acoustic Pressure Domain and in the Intensity Domain

In general, the theoretical modelling of acoustic scattering on seafloor is necessary in order to predict which features of bottom echo and in what manner should be used to characterise the seabed properties with best potential generalisation abilities and sufficient level of accuracy. In the paper, the two approaches of the backscattered bottom echo waveform modelling are analysed and compared. Namely, the modelling of the backscattered echo waveform in pressure domain using Kirchhoff approximation and the modelling of the echo in acoustic intensity domain. The simulation of bottom echoes using those two concurrent approaches was performed for the same seabed surfaces. The obtained preliminary results are presented and compared with respect to the adequacy of each modelling method for approximate describing the seabed backscattering.
