Reflection with beam displacement from simple barriers
The problem of reflection with beam displacement from an acoustic barrier, comprising two parallel boundaries, is examined with regard to the relationship between geometric ray paths and the locus of stationary phase points. The beam displacement Δ and reflected field pR
are predicted for sound incident from above, first for a perfectly reflecting barrier, and then for a penetrable lower boundary. A series of regularly spaced kinks is shown to appear in the phase of the integrand of the expression for PR
. Each kink results in a non-negligible
contribution to the field: the condition for these contributions to interfere constructively is shown to be identical to that for the presence of a classical ray. Criteria are set out for the resolution of the various multipath arrivals.
