On Pitch of Noise
The pitch of filtered noise is measured by matching with pure tones. Low-pass noise with cut-off frequencies beyond 5 kHz, high-pass noise with cut-off frequencies lower than 500 Hz and band-pass noise broader than 6 kHz elicit no distinct pitch sensation. High-pass- and low-pass noise
show a pitch corresponding to the cut-off frequency of the filter. When the bandwidth of band-pass noise is decreased to small values, two pitches corresponding to the band edges merge into one pitch near the center-frequency.
