In this study the author describes at first the apparatus and the experimental system utilised. He eliminates initially the instrument and the player, the first because the sound boxes of instruments are different from one to another, the second in regard to the guidance of the bow which should, in the experiments, be constant in so far as it concerns the parameters, velocity, pressure and the distance between bow and bridge. These restrictions lead to the realisation of a system which simulates the playing of the bow and permits the independent variation of each of the three parameters given above.

After having repeated, in several cases, the experiments of Helmholtz, of Bouasse and of Charron, on the velocity of vibration to provide more information and to specify certain features. He shows in detail the influence of the various parameters on the stationary state.
