The author gives at first a general survey of the methods of representing the vibratory state of solids by means of the spatial and temporal distributions of the velocity and of stress or dilatation respectively. Devices for the measurement of dilatation and amplitude, velocity and acceleration and their properties (absolute sensitivity, frequency response, directional selectivity, constancy with respect to time), as well as methods for the absolute calibration, are dealtwith in detail. Finally excitation systems aredescribed which permit determination of the vibration behaviour under well defined states of excitation, also some combined systems which can be used as impedance meters.
