Open Access Über die Grundlagen der Schwingungsbehandlung von Metallschmelzen

Download Article:
Despite numerous efforts it has been impossible hitherto to develop useful devices for the ultrasonic treatment of metallic melts. Due to the high service temperatures in conjunction with the rather complicated conditions for conducting sound in solids, an effective excitation of the melt as well as the measurement of the sound intensity are extremely difficult. Economical and defined service conditions are only warranted by an exact tuning of all parts and suppression of cavitation at the crucible wall.

These requirements can be more easily met by the electrodynamic process. Based on an approximate calculation of the efficiency different electrodynamic set-ups are compared. Due to the decisive influence of the damping factor of the crucible material, an exact knowledge of the vibration properties of the materials in question is necessary for a successful further development. An electrodynamic apparatus suitable for such investigations is described and results obtained with different materials are discussed.
