The testing of Dussik's ultrasonic method for outlining the ventricles of the brain in life leads to a number of difficulties due to the physical nature of the application. The chief are:

1. The damping produced by the ventricles is small compared to that of the brain and the bones. The spherical form of the cranium produces refraction, and distortion in the ultrasonic picture.

2. The variations in thickness of the cranium produce a picture which depends so much on its structure that it masks the attenuation in the ventricles.

A study of these disturbing effects shows that it is not really possible to outline the ventricles by means of the Dussik projection method.
