Learning to manage a complex resource: a case of NTFP assessment in Nepal
Due to increasing recognition of the importance of Non-Timber Forest Products (NTFPs) to local livelihoods and biodiversity conservation, the need for accurate assessment of NTFPs growing stock and yields as well as identification of sustainable harvesting options has become more critical
than ever before. This paper seeks to explore how learning is taking place in Nepal in order to develop NTFP resource assessment and sustainable harvesting techniques based on an analysis of case studies from contrasting contexts. Using an adaptive management approach as a framework, the analysis
focuses on developing an understanding of the strong and weak aspects of the current methodologies, leading to recommendations for ways forward.
