New Enantioselective, Potentiometric Membrane Electrodes Based on C70 Fullerenes as Chiral Selectors

[5,6]Fullerene-C70 (I) and diethyl(1,2-methanofullerene C70)-71,71-dicarboxylate (II) are proposed as novel chiral selectors for the construction of enantioselective, potentiometric membrane electrodes. L-Proline was selected as a model analyte for the study of the behavior of these electrodes. The best response was obtained when diethyl(1,2-methanofullerene C70)-71,71-dicarboxylate was used for the electrode's construction. The best enantioselectivity was achieved for the [5,6]fullerene-C70-based electrode. The surface of the electrodes can be regenerated by simply polishing, obtaining a fresh surface ready to be used in a new assay.
