The Effect of Piezoelectricity on the Mineralization of Calcium Phosphate in Piezoelectric Biomaterials

Early reports on the influence of collagen piezoelectricity in remodeling of bone have attracted many researchers to the piezoelectric bio ceramics such as barium titanate (BT). In this study, the effects of both polarizing and imposing stress upon the quality of Ca-P mineralization in piezoelectric bioceramics were investigated. Commercially compact disks of barium titanate and laboratory developed disks of porous barium titanate with nanostructured hydroxyapatite coating were used in this in vitro study. Six groups of ceramic samples (compact/porous, non-polarized/polarized/polarized under stress) were immersed in Simulated Body Fluid (SBF) for 7, 14, 21 and 28 days. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) images of samples after one month of soaking in SBF were used to study the changes in the surface morphology of samples. Also, variations in Ca2+ ions during this month were studied by means of Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP) analysis.
