The T53 engine has accumulated over 6 million flying hours in the Bell Helicopter UH‐1 and AH‐1 series U.S. Army helicopters under the most severe mission and environmental conditions, including combat in the Republic of Vietnam (RVN). In the early 1960's, the UH‐1 mission was primarily one of general utility and medical evacuation. At that time, the average operational time was 10 flying hours per aircraft per month, and missions were flown by single aircraft operating under relatively mild environmental conditions. Requirements and development gradually modified the equipment to meet troop transport and armed assault missions. Today, operational flying time approaches 70 hours per aircraft per month, and consists of formations of aircraft operating out of primitive areas.
