Oman: Economy, Politics and Government

Abstract:
Oman is a stable country ruled by a moderate monarch with absolute power who has governed the country in a relatively even-handed way, improving the quality of life of his subjects since he overthrew his father in 1970 after a bloodless coup. While the standard of living is not on a par with more advanced countries, the nation's healthcare facilities are among the best in the world and genuine efforts are being made to increase the level of education and skills among the general population. Like most countries in the Middle East, oil remains central to all of Oman's economic activities and has been the driving force behind the development and modernisation of the state. Although the government has adopted a policy of diversification and privatisation, there is a long way to go before Oman can become genuinely less dependent on its oil revenues.
