Jamaica: Economy, Politics and Government

Abstract:
Jamaica suffers from a stagnant economy and a society which is overrun by official corruption, illicit drugs and high levels of violence. The downturn in the US, the country's main trading partner, is likely to have a severe impact on key sectors of the economy, such as manufacturing and tourism. This economic malaise has given the opposition Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) a boost in its ratings, to the detriment of the ruling People's National Party (PNP). However, the public hold all politicians in low esteem due to endemic corruption and police violence that cuts across the party divide.
