El Salvador: Economy, Politics and Government

Abstract:
El Salvador's contemporary political landscape is formed out of the seismic political and social changes brought out by the country's civil war. The main parties - the Alianza Republicana Nacionalista (Republican Nationalist Alliance) (Arena) and the Frente Farabundo Mart? de Liberaci?n Nacional (Farabundo Mart? National Liberation Front) (FMLN) - are former warring adversaries who have quit the battle-field in favour of the ballot box since the signing of the 1992 peace accords. The economy is gradually shifting from its dependence on coffee towards the processing and export of products such as textiles which are produced in the maquilas (manufacturing assemblies). Such growth opportunities are sorely needed. Meanwhile, recovery from the crippling effects of the war and El Salvador's long history of marginalisation from international trade will be a major test for El Salvador's impoverished society and the new democratic institutions that govern it.
