Abstract:

Governing Macedonia since independence in 1991 has always involved walking a very sensitive tightrope. The ethnic and political divisions, combined with an artificial nature of Macedonian national identity, always made Macedonian unity problematic. The legacy of the 1999 Kosovo conflict had a bad effect on Macedonia which saw a rise in ethnic Albanian nationalism and guerrilla forces fighting their cause along the border - threatening to catapult Macedonia head on into a full civil war.
