Abstract:
In a strife-torn region, Gabon remains an oasis of comparative economic and political stability. This does not however mean that the oil-dependent economy can look forward to a prosperous future, nor that the polity is a paragon of democratic accountability. Elections in Gabon have become a matter of routine, with the outcome <196> the re-election of President El Hadj Omar Bongo <196> largely predictable. The reliance on oil has stunted the development of certain sectors of the economy, principally forestry and agriculture, and subjected the economy to the fluctuations of the international price of oil.
