Framing as a Means to Manage a Supply Network
Abstract:In this article we discuss supply networks and how a buying firm may create and manage in such networks. We present a case study of a main contractor within the construction industry who has tried to develop a supply network. We pay particular attention to the early stages of the development, i.e. how the supply network is created, and how it is managed in the startup phase. Furthermore, we identify a number of different 'network framing modes', which the involved firms used in order to make sense of and substantiate the emerging supply network. We pay particular attention to whether or not the suppliers were actively involved in these framing efforts. Finally, we discuss the variety of network framing modes identified, and how firms may benefit from creating and using a mix of network framing modes in their efforts at developing supply networks.
