After the 19th IMP-Conference in Lugano, (September 2003) a selection committee consisting of representatives from the JCB and the IMP Group met to discuss a preliminary selection of conference papers for this special issue. At the same time, editorial responsibility was vested in four of the authors of the papers that had been earmarked for inclusion in this special issue. These four authors took separate responsibility for managing the review process of papers other than the one they were involved in. In this editorial, we explore the relationship between purchasing and strategy and how it has developed over time. The editorial consists of three parts. First, we describe the role of purchasing in corporate strategy. Secondly, we identify a number of strategic issues in purchasing related to its increasing influence on corporate strategy. Finally, we outline how the papers included in this special issue relate to these broad themes.
