Abstract:
A pilot plant (A2O system) fed with domestic wastewater was operated to examine the effect ofvarying different types of carbon source (HAc, HPr and glucose), as a complement to the wastewater,on the process performance and on microbial population. The operational condition that leads to amajor removal of TN (82 percent) was achieved with HAc. When the complementary carbon source wasHPr, a better removal efficiency of PO4 P (97 percent) was observed, being in accordance with the higherPAO population fraction detected in FISH analysis (41.9 plus minus 3.0 percent), suggesting that members of PAOwhich were able to reduce nitrate (DPAOs) gained importance over members of PAO which were notable to reduce nitrate, thus improving the denitrifying P removal. Keywords: Phosphorous, nitrogen, carbon source, A2O, PAO, GAO.
