An empirical transformation model is used in a desktop simulation study to mimic the impact of sludge pre-treatment technologies on a number of system responses such as digester VSS destruction, digester gas production, and potential return-stream nutrient load. The modelling shows that the impact of pre-treatment technologies is significant especially for sludge mixtures containing large portions of WAS; even more so if the WAS is from an activated sludge system operated at a long SRT.
