Making Green Infrastructure Greener: Sustainability Rating for the Design and Construction of Stormwater Infrastructure
Abstract:There are several tools available for evaluating and rating the sustainable aspects of construction projects; however, these tools are typically sector-based or regionally accepted. The Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure (ISI) has developed Envision™ as a sustainable infrastructure rating system that is applicable to all types of infrastructure in North America. The rating system is available for beta testing for users to provide feedback to ISI to improve the tool. Envision™ was evaluated with a bioretention project to determine the applicability of the tool to stormwater infrastructure. The project scored well and, while there are still improvements to be made to the tool, Envision proved to be a valuable framework for improving the sustainability of stormwater infrastructure, the original “green infrastructure”.
